It Is Finished

A few years ago I had gotten myself into such bad debt that in order to save my house I had to file Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. What this meant is that each month I had to send a bankruptcy trustee $500 a month which she'd use to pay off my outstanding debts. Needless to say it sucked big time having to give a huge portion of my pay out in order to get myself out of the trouble I had gotten myself into. After a few years of lean living and accepting the kindness of others I just found out that my bankruptcy is over three months early and I am completely debt free. Praise God for finally being done with this nonsense!

Goodbye Ward Churchill

I am all fore freedom of speech. Without my basic right to speak what I think and feel will turn us into a modern day "1984". That being said I believe other people have the right to correct me when I am speaking foolishly and to disagree with me. Heck, I am a nobody with a little blog that a few people read. I don't have the power of a Ward Churchill who each year has hundreds of young minds eating out of his hands. I have been trying to think of a nice way to put my feelings on this buy, but I can't. The dude is a whacko and a fraud. And he finally has gotten fired from his teaching position at a prestigious college. A few of his more colorful claims are that he is a native american and part of elite forces in Viet Nam and the people who died in the Twin Towers were little Eichmann's. I don't have a problem being taught by people I disagree with because it is nothing new. I do have a problem with people giving false information and not being held accountable for it.

Woo hoo!

I am getting my first official payed gig as a writer. A short piece I wrote is going to appear in a future issue of Geeze Magazine. I am so stoked. It was a piece on going to the beach and my lack of just being. I'll make sure to post it when I get the chance.

Finally, I Got To See The Pogues! Was It Worth It?

Can you believe I was excited to see a band fronted by a guy with a froggy voice and a mug like that? Finally, after 15 years of waiting and hoping someday the original members of the band plus Shane Macgowan would get back together and tour the country I got to see The Pogues perform. And yes, it was worth it. Worth every last penny (and this was a much more expensive show than what I am accustomed to). First off, a short rant about opening acts. I'm all for them. It can introduce you to a great band on the rise whose music is unique or the very least fun, or it can be sheer torture. This case was the latter. A group of young guys from Ohio called Sarving Goliath started off the show who were musically pretty good, their music had a lot of variety, and was reminiscient to early 90's alternative. But they went too damn long and they looked like they could care less about performing at all. They probably never even heard The Pogues and saw it as another job. Though you can never tell because they sure didn't look like they cared. And note to bookers: if you are going to hire an opening act make sure they are more complimentary to the style of music to the headlining act. I can think of at least one band that was more deserving of the opportunity and I am sure they would have appreciated it more as well. And note to the band: if you want to try and appear all hardcore and smash your instruments make sure the guitar strap isn't around your neck when you try to throw it to the ground. You just looked stupid.

Sorry, back to the show....

A few days ago Shane had injured his leg, but promised to keep on performing. First, the band comes out, all 8 members of the original band (a rarety these days, Chicago tours with only the original 3) and a roady wheels out Shane Macgowan, resident poet, a man who lived the music he sang, a real rambler and drunkard with a beautiful heart. And he looked like an old man, much older than his 49 years as all the heroin and booze has finally caught up to him. Did the audience care? No, they cheered all the more. Could you imagine Mick Jagger or Britney Spears or any other singer coming out to perform in a wheel chair and getting the love Shane got? Think about it. This isn't just any band. This is our band. The fans braved a snow storm to come out to see him because they care that much. A friend and I wondered what song they'd play to star the show. No suprises it was "If I Should Fall From Grace With God". A catchy song more metaphor than hymn that would make you giggle if you saw the light up virgin Mary statue they had on one of the speakers that changed colors every few seconds. They played all their usual hits like A Pair Of Brown Eyes, Sunny Side of the Street, Bottle Of Smoke, and even threw in a few that I didn't recognize. As an added bonus for the song "Fiesta" Spider Stacy kept beat by banging a cookie sheet on his head. I was disapointed to not hear White City performed which is the first song I heard to make me a fan. It was the perfect concert in the fact that the crowd was into it and the band was obviously having a fun as well. Shane was in rare form in spite of looking tired. I'd definately see them again when they come to the Philly area.

Finally! I Get To See The Pogues!

I have waited 15 years for the opportunity to see The Pogues perform live. I had the chance to see Shane Macgowan perform as a solo perfomer, but because I was an idiot and chasing after a girl I gave up the tickets. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! So now, like a giddy school girl I keep calling up Ken and saying, "Tomorrow's the Pogues!" Enjoy these videos. Am I youtube happy?

Over The Rhine - After The Show

I love suprises. If I think something could be good, but get something far beyond that I am happy. On Saturday night Ken, his wife, a friend of his from Ohio, and myself went to see Over The Rhine. They were nice enough to give me a free ticket after a friend of theirs backed out. So it was cool getting to socialize with Ken and Kathy outside of church and youth ministry. Both of our schedules are pretty hectic so we do not get much opportunity to hang out. And as an added bonus I got to bond with the J.Myles who has developed the habit of scratching me and laughing. Anyhooo....

I had no real expectations about the concert, but I was more than pleasantly suprised. First of all, they didn't have an opening act. Hmmm, a bold move? No one to get the group warmed up and ready to go? Alright. There concert lasted about two hours with no breaks. And the band members looked like they were enjoying themselves being there. It wasn't just another job to them, but a chance to play some incredible music. Finally, they played primarily new music. I can't remember the last time a band whose concert consisted of new music. And to have the audience eating it up like we were (I include myself in this big time). I love concerts like these because it is more communal and homey in feel. If there were couches there it'd have felt like the performance was going on in my living room. And yes, I dream of meeting a woman of God like the lead singer. The secret is out! So if any of you knoww a woman like her in the Jersey area drop me a line.

Nearing the end of the show someone gave them a Christmas gift consisting of chocolate, slang flash cards, and a Bible. People cheered when he held up the Bible. It made me wonder how many people besides ourselves were Christians in the audience. I mean, real Christians who love the Lord and not just in name only. Are any of us really? And how much does their faith factor into the writing of their music? As a Christian who writes poetry I can no more keep my faith from influencing my work than a feminist or communist can. Whether overtly or not your beliefs come out in your music. It's just a thought really.

And just for the heck of it. One of my favorite bands, Tegan and Sara

Concert Weekend

Thanks to Pre-Posthumous Musings I am going to the Over The Rhine Concert this Friday Night. I'm stoked, it isn't often I get to go to concerts anymore.

This is what I get to look forward too...

And on another note, I was amazed to find on vinyl the Stray Cats. More amazingly I found an album of greek rock music from this oldies group The Four Coins. Who knew?

The Way Rock 'N Roll Ought To Be

I am not as aware of Black Angel's music, but I can safely say The Black Keys are the real deal. NPR describes their music pretty well and offers a sample of a recent concert in DC. Fat Possum Records first discovered them and I don't think anyone else would have done them any justice. The lavel started by finding old blues men who had long been forgotten or never got the opportunity to record. Many of which were in their 80's and 90's and hadn't been heard outside of the Mississippi Delta.
