God of The Dollar

Having come from the trenches of the prosperity movement I am always interested in any mention of them in the news media. Religion and Ethics Weekly did an expose on how strongly the prosperity movement has infiltrated the black churches. You read the article and watch the video here.

Sadly, we've also exported it to Africa...

It's obscene, twisting the message like that. It both angers me and saddens me and it also makes me wonder how much longer the church can survive at this rate.

It's interesting to me that these preachers hold themselves up as examples of the prosperity they propound. They are wealthy merely because they have persuaded large numbers of people to give them money. I wonder what the good Reverend Price's gospel would sound like if he had to go to work at a real job?

Dave,
Thanks for the article. That really saddens me. With all the hardship and poverty in africa I would imagine it sounds very appealing.

Art,
I don't know. I'm not sure if the prosperity gospel is a majority in the church or not. I do know a lot of people do follow it very closely. I think the church will survive, but one of two things will happen. Either they will leave stronger more mature in their faith being able to use the hardship to teach others or they will leave broken unwilling to come back. I am hoping for the former. Idealistically, I hope they learn from it and leave without being broken.

Rick,
Thanks man.

Dorsey,
I am suprised that no one has ever put two and two together that the only reason they are as wealthy as they are is because of the backs of these believers.

RC,
I hate it too man. They are still brothers and sisters and christ and need our love and guidance.
